Memphis design is an Italian design movement that started in Milan in 1980 and became known for bright colour, geometric shapes and patterned surfaces. It broke with the grey, serious modernism that came before it. Today it is one of the most recognisable references in maximalist interiors.

Where it came from

The designer Ettore Sottsass gathered a group of young designers in Milan in December 1980. The group launched its first collection at the Milan furniture fair in September 1981. The name is commonly said to come from a Bob Dylan song playing during their first meeting. Members included Michele De Lucchi, Matteo Thun, Nathalie Du Pasquier, George Sowden and Martine Bedin. The group disbanded in 1987, but its influence kept growing.

How to recognise it

  • Clashing but deliberate colour: pink, teal, yellow, black.
  • Simple geometry: cylinders, triangles, arches, cubes.
  • Patterned laminate surfaces, including terrazzo and squiggle prints.
  • Furniture that looks like sculpture, with legs and joints that are part of the drawing.
  • Humour. Many pieces were meant to be a little absurd.

Why it fits Indian homes

Indian interiors have always handled colour confidently, from painted havelis to inlay work. The difference is that Memphis edits colour into a small number of strong decisions.

How to use it without overdoing it

  1. Choose one anchor: a sculptural sideboard, a patterned floor, or a bold wall.
  2. Keep the shell calm. White, plaster or pale stone walls let the pieces speak.
  3. Limit the palette to three or four colours and repeat each at least twice in the room.
  4. Mix shapes: one curved element for every two angular ones.
  5. Use real materials. Memphis originally relied on plastic laminate. Today, craft techniques such as inlay, cast brass, hand-tufted fabric and carved wood give the same bold shapes more depth and last longer.

Common mistakes

Using every colour at once, matching everything, and treating it as a themed room instead of a design approach.
