Interior Design for Hyderabad's Climate: Heat, Monsoon and Materials

Hyderabad has a hot semi-arid climate with summer highs often between 38 and 42°C and a monsoon from June to September that brings roughly 800 mm of rain a year. Interiors here should limit afternoon heat gain, keep air moving, and use materials that tolerate both dry heat and monsoon moisture.

Control the sun first

West-facing windows take the harshest afternoon heat. Use low-E glass or deep external shading on the west and south sides. Curtains reduce glare but do not stop the heat once the sun has come through the glass.

Use the ceiling and the terrace

A top-floor flat gets heat from the roof slab. Insulation above the slab or a reflective roof finish lowers the temperature inside more than extra AC capacity does. A false ceiling with insulation in the void adds a further buffer.

Move air

Cross-ventilation works when openings sit on opposite walls. Ceiling fans combined with AC let you set the thermostat higher while keeping the same comfort.

Choose materials for the climate

  • Flooring: Vitrified tile, stone and granite stay cool underfoot. Large-format tiles cut the number of grout lines, which are where dirt and moisture collect.
  • Timber: Use seasoned, kiln-dried wood and seal all faces, including the back and edges. Unsealed backs absorb monsoon humidity and warp.
  • Plywood: Use boiling water proof grades for kitchens and bathrooms, and check that the grade stamp matches the invoice.
  • Walls: Choose washable paint or lime-based plaster, and fix leaks in external walls before painting, or the finish will blister.
  • Termites: Anti-termite treatment should be done before the woodwork goes in.

Colour and light

Strong sun makes light colours look washed out in the afternoon. Mid-tone walls and warm neutrals hold up better than pure white.

Outdoor links

Balconies and courtyards cool the home when shaded and planted. Place plants where they shade glass, not where they block ventilation.

How do I keep a Hyderabad flat cool without more AC?

Shade west windows, insulate the roof, and improve cross-ventilation.

Does monsoon damage wooden furniture?

It can if the wood is unseasoned or unsealed on the back and edges.
