Architect vs Interior Designer in India: Who Do You Actually Need?

An architect designs the building and its structure. An interior designer plans the inside: layout, finishes, lighting, furniture and fittings. If you are changing walls, floors or the structure, you need an architect. If the shell is fixed and you want it to work and look right, an interior designer is the right call. Some professionals, including Mrunalini Nikte, are trained in both.
The legal difference
In India, the title "architect" is protected under the Architects Act, 1972, and requires registration with the Council of Architecture. There is no equivalent statutory registration for interior designers, so anyone can use the title. This makes checking training and a verifiable body of work more important when hiring one.
What an architect handles
- Building design and structural coordination with engineers
- Municipal drawings and permissions
- Moving, adding or removing walls and openings
- Facades, staircases, terraces and extensions
What an interior designer handles
- Space planning inside the existing structure
- Joinery and furniture design
- Lighting design, electrical and plumbing points layout
- Material selection, colour and finishes
- Site supervision of the interior work
Where they overlap
Ceilings, bathrooms, kitchens and staircases sit on the line. A designer without architectural training may not spot that a wall is load-bearing. A good designer will always ask for the structural drawing before proposing changes.
Which should you hire?
- Buying a flat or villa and finishing it: interior designer.
- Building a new house, adding a floor, or moving walls: architect.
- Commercial fit-out inside leased premises: interior designer, with an architect if the landlord requires approval of structural changes.
- Large project with both: one practice that does both removes the handover gap between two firms.
Questions to ask either one
Can I see detailed drawings, not just renders? Who supervises on site? How are vendors paid? What happens if something goes wrong mid-project?
Frequently asked questions
Can an interior designer call themselves an architect?
No. The title is legally protected for registered architects.
Is an architect more expensive than an interior designer?
Fee structures differ by practice and scope, so compare the scope of work in each proposal rather than the headline number.
Do I need an architect for a flat renovation?
Only if you are altering structural elements. Society approval is usually needed for any wall changes.
Who should I hire for a luxury home?
Choose based on whether the structure is changing. A practice trained in both covers the whole job.
